The Deviant Art Festival happened in July 2006 in the town of Trollhättan in Sweden. We have been invited to return next year. The festival is expanding with the addition of new exhibition spaces, an increased budget and a larger organising team.

This all means that we need a fresh batch of artists to get involved…

AGM Meeting

Greetings All!
Welcome (back) to London Met.
Casstration is up and running again, this time with a new recruit, Tim Pratt.

To get things rolling, we are having an AGM (annual general meeting) on Thursday, 2nd November in Room 302 (next to Nico's office) at 5:30pm which will be followed by a trip to The Castle pub.

The aim of the meeting is firstly, to meet as many members as possible, and secondly, to see what it is people would like us to organise this year, although we do have a few things up our sleeves already. A member of the SU will also be present in order to give us official society status.

Will Self talks at Tate

Will Self gives a Monique Beudert Memorial Lecture, part of a series that focuses on literary writers and their relationship with visual culture. Self is the author of four collections of short stories, the first of which, The Quantity Theory of Insanity (Bloomsbury, 1991), won the 1993 Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize. He has also written five novels, including the forthcoming The Book of Dave (Viking, 2006) and How the Dead Live (Bloomsbury, 2000), which was shortlisted for the Whitbread Book of the Year in 2000. He is a regular television and radio broadcaster and contributes to a plethora of publications. Self discusses how visual imagery has helped shape his work.

On Saturday the 29th of April at 5.30 there is a talk at the Barbican called Beckett's Influence...

A panel, including Professor Mary Bryden of Cardiff University, Terence Brown of University College Dublin and Roy Foster, will discuss how Beckett has influenced other writers, thinkers, poets and visual artists and whether this has helped them to 'make sense' of it all.
It is chaired by Alastair Niven, Principal of Cumberland Lodge.

Tucked away out the back of Bethnal Green, Sound Screens is part of Threshold, a series of experimental sonic soireés sending reverb through the East End during March and continuing through April. Threshold provides a platform for the exploration of contemporary sound art, looking at the relationship between sound and how it interacts with space. Tonight's showcase sees artists merging audio and visual material to create collages sampled from an array of sources. Veteran multimedia artist PeopleLikeUs chops up found footage, creating sinister dreamscapes, while HFRLab's Cityscan spools a soundtrack that travels along the visual pattern of a pulsating city. Why should you care about it?

As a student and society member you will be affected as follows:

· This constitution removes all responsibility students had in organising social and recreational services.

· This constitution is cutting out the possibility of final year students of being eligible as sabbatical officers. It also prevents Freshers and those with a mental health difficulty to stand for election.

· The university proposes not to fund or recognise the Students' Union if we do not have 7.5% of all eligible voters take part in elections. Under new regime sabbatical officer will not have any staff support or funding to help run the campaign.

· They have taken clubs and societies away from the union and removed peer support.

· The new constitution removes the Participation and Development Officer position.

I am a believer explores themes of migration, desire and power, particularly their relation to issues of cultural constructs in our society. It is based on the Changing the Guard ceremony and will involve thirty two men - mostly second generation immigrants - choreographed by Tom Dale and the artist using the symbolism and movements of the actual ceremony brought in the middle of Trafalgar Square.

The Big Buzzard Horns band will accompany the piece.

The artist is using a situation based in reality, which he manipulates to such an extent that it becomes intensely dreamlike and unreal by inserting a dialectical process, which based on paradox corresponds to the unstable nature of any culture. In I am a believer he exploits the endless possibilities that lie outside the range of what are usually considered “normal” situations. He is therefore suggesting the ambivalent nature of reality itself.

The use of this particular group of men to re-enact the Changing the Guard ceremony which normally symbolizes the protection of the monarchy, becomes somehow surreal and unbelievable; the fact that is made real opens up other cultural possibilities which are only limited by our imagination. Since we are all members of British society maybe one day this will be the case! Furthermore, it demonstrates what would happen when those who are usually only the spectators of these ceremonies become the ones who carry out these symbolic rituals. Reza Aramesh attempts to disrupt any dogmatic view of culture through the interference of a conceptual impossibility, causing fixed cultural phenomena to inherit unfixed and improbable conclusion.

The performance will be followed by a panel discussion on Saturday 4th March, 6.30pm at the ICA with Maxa Zoller art critic, JJ Charlesworth art critic, and artists Reza Aramesh and Mustafa Hulusi. The panel will be chaired by Vivienne Gaskin, Director of Performing Arts, International Projects and New Media at the ICA.

Late at Tate this Friday: Goths!

Late At Tate To tie in with the Gothic Nightmares exhibition currently on at Tate Britain, Late at Tate Britain on Friday 3rd of March has a gothic feel to it Martin Sexton presents 'New Gothic' which combines music and performance and features Truth Machine's 'Heraldic Unicorn Lion Grace System', described variously as 'the high-concept band to end all high-concept bands' and as a cult religious group by others. The varying members of this arts collective reportedly all work to a set of instructions cut from the text of books that vary from hermetic works, theological mediations to pulp fiction, erotica and maps. Steve Severin (of Siouxsie and the Banshee's) conducts and provides the sonic soundscape. Ride up with the Magical Lock-down Dark Pegasus: a Harley-Davidson XL53 custom motorcycle resplendent with blue-black Scottish crow wings and 'pimped' with a DVD monitor as tail-plate, that echoes TE Lawrence's quote that 'A motorcycle with a touch of blood in it is better than all the riding animals on earth, because of its logical extension of our faculties, and the hint, the provocations, to excess'. Meanwhile, HMC create new visual experiences, as they unleash chthonic forces with their technological multimedia film noir Rattus Norvegicus. Musical interference is provided by The @mbassadors, as they tune into a dark template of pop noir. And finally, Bauhaus have composed and constructed With Gravity Comes a Broken Heart, a specially commissioned sound installation for the evening (http://www.bauhausmusik.com/news/) Admission free.

Samuel Beckett Season

The Barbican is host to a Samuel Beckett centenary season from March to May, I am organising a series of group visits to a play, some films and a talk.
Samuel Beckett's plays and novels, expressing a tragic-comic vision of the absurdity of human existence, have been hugely influential. More relentlessly than any other author he poses the most important question: why are we here? He spent his entire career chipping away at this one question to poignant and hilarious effect. He is an author whose work shares much with visual artists and I think it would be completely appropriate to go and see some of the events in the coming months. Some of these will be subsidised by the union others will be very cheep with our student cards, some of the events have already sold out so I am having to make decisions now!
One talk titled ‘Beckett’s Influence’ will consider Beckett’s affect on writers, thinkers and visual artists and I think this will be useful for many of you. With our student cards it will be only £3 and so I shall not get extra funds for it. However beforehand we should see one of his plays perhaps Endgame or Waiting for Godot. We could also see one of the triple bills of film versions of his plays.

Please let me know if you want be involved so I know roughly the numbers for buying the tickets, and spread the word if you know anybody who would like to have the opportunity; or, if you have any preferences for particular plays.

This summer I subscribed to the Arts Council's Arts Jobs digest, and found it very useful. They send you one email a day with a list of all the jobs, internships, calls for submissions, etc. that they have received for that day. Through it I took part in the opening show of a little gallery on Finchley Road, and got a friend of mine an internship with a photography studio. I continue to find it useful, it has built up my C.V. significantly, and I imagine that it will be helpful when I have finished my degree and am looking for a proper job or to take part in shows.

'I Will Not Make Any More Boring Art' - John Balderessi

Happy New Year, everyone. We trust you had a good one.
Many thanks to all who attended (and persevered with) the percussive nightmare that was the Casstration Christmas drinks. After a couple of hours of white noise, and many a futile plead for peace, we emigrated to the more aurally pleasing environs of The Castle. It seemed work out in the end, and we hope everyone had a good night. We certainly enjoyed ourselves and it was great to see so many people there.

Just a couple of very dull but very important things to kick off the new year:

1) In order to make Casstration official, and therefore eligible for Union funding, we have to hold an AGM (Annual General Meeting), which must be attended by at least 20 members of the society. We attempted to hold this twice before Christmas, but for some reason unbeknown to us, the Union have not been very helpful in getting this done. But rest assured that we are pressing them to help us out so we can get the bureaucratic stuff out if the way. We already have a few artists that are interested in giving talks, but we can’t confirm dates, etc until we have had the AGM.

2) We have attempted to email everyone that has signed up for Casstration. However, a substantial number of emails have failed to get to the recipient. We think this is the result of 1 of 2 possible reasons: 1) your inbox is filled to its capacity and therefore cannot accept any more mail, and/or 2) we can’t read your handwriting and have typed it into the address line incorrectly. If it is possible that either of these applies to you, please let us know so we can rectify any mistakes. We wouldn’t want you to miss out on anything.

In the meantime, feel free to post stuff on here. We’re a bit lonely at the moment.

Hello there.
Welcome to the Casstration blog. Here you will be able to find details of forthcoming events, artist talks, parties, gallery visits, trips, etc etc. We also want to encourage all Casstrates to use this blog as a forum in which to discuss work, theories and ideas independently of academic structures. More of that to come in the very near future. Lastly, if you know someone who hasn’t signed up for Casstration yet, we suggest you have exceedingly strong words with them...

13/12/05 - 2nd Year open studio show, 6-8pm, 3rd floor studio.
15/12/05 - Christmas drinks in The George, Commercial Road (same side of the road as Commercial Road building, but another 5-10 minute walk) from 6pm.
